Treatments
Haemodialysis
Haemodialysis involves taking blood out of a patient and cleaning it through a haemodialysis machine before returning the blood back to the patient.聽 This can be performed in the hospital, at satellite/community clinics or at home. At the start of 2015 there were approximately 340 patients receiving this treatment from the unit.聽 The clinical outcomes for the haemodialysis clinic are excellent and can be reviewed in Renal Registry publications.
Peritoneal Dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis involves using the patient鈥檚 peritoneum (abdomen lining) as a dialysis membrane, and the dialysis takes place within the patient鈥檚 body, instead of through a dialysis machine.聽 Aproximately 60 patients use this technique in their own homes as a means of dialysis.
Transplantation
The聽transplant service at St George’s supports kidney聽patients in South West London, Surrey and Sussex.
St George鈥檚 Healthcare is a leading centre for kidney transplantation and renal failure. The team are pioneers in their field, constantly pushing the boundaries in medical care to provide renal patients with a full range groundbreaking treatments and surgical procedures to improve the outcome for renal failure patients. All kidneys from live donors are聽removed using state-of-the-art keyhole surgery techniques.聽 We are one of only a few centres who offer the retroperitoneal approach which means patients usually only need to be in hospital for three days to donate a kidney.
In 2014, 130 kidney transplants were performed and independent data has demonstrated the transplant outcomes to be excellent.聽 Approximately 480 patient attend the transplant clinic at St George’s for their care after transplantation.
Vascular Access
华体会 requiring haemodialysis require a means of connecting to the haemodialysis machine.聽 While short term use of dialysis lines can be used the best practice for the majority of patients is to have an arteriovenous fistula or graft created.聽 This is performed by two highly specialised vascular surgeons at St George’s and they deliver both a local and wider national expertise to support haemodialysis patients and units.
A good source of information regarding treatment options is available on the internet.聽 The following link takes you to an external site from which you will be able to access a number of patient videos,
Research, Education and聽International collaborations
The unit has an active clinical research and education programme.聽 We have collaborations through the International Society of Nephrology with the renal units at PGIMER Chandigarh in India and at Accra in Ghana.聽 More information about the International Society of Nephrology can be accessed via the following link
